The St. George’s senior and junior jazz bands competed in the Kiwanis Jazz Festival at the Capilano University. The musicians departed the school at 7:30 am for the festival after loading their instruments in a van. At around 8:15, the boys arrived at the university and they were pumped up for the performance. At 9:15, the junior jazz band performed three spectacular jazzy pieces: Mr. Casual, Lil Darlin, and Whirly Bird in front of the judges. They did extremely well and captured a gold standing. The senior jazz band performed an hour later and won a gold rating as well. The jazz bands listened and watched a couple bands such as Southridge and Seaquam perform their pieces. Furthermore, they watched the Capilano University “A” Band (Top Band of the University) performed some jazz pieces and they were spectacular. Finally, there was the senior jazz combo and they performed in the afternoon. Unfortunately, one of the songs that the combo played (‘Misty’) was not a qualified jazz ballad. Therefore, the group lost some points due to the fact that it wasn’t a qualified piece. However, they got silver rating which is still pretty impressive because of the loss of points and for the fact that it was their first performance. Now, all three St. George’s jazz bands are preparing themselves for the Kelowna Jazz Festival which will be from April 17-19!
