As the school year begins, Staff Writer Leo Lin and I decided to venture into the London Drugs on Dunbar to conduct an interview about theft in the community. “Just like any store in a retail environment, it’s bound to happen,” said a London Drugs Employee.

Worth noticing, theft on Dunbar has become increasingly prevalent in the community. On August 3rd of this year, two masked white men pried open the front door of the local Pokémon card shop on Dunbar using a crowbar. They used a stolen Ford pickup truck and a rope to pull a safe right out of the store. The safe contained tens of thousands of dollars in collectibles, including at least one rare Pokémon card valued at nearly $19,000.

Even more surprisingly, London Drugs does enact measures to prevent shoplifting before it occurs, unlike other retail stores with security guards stationed at entrances and exits. Instead, they implement a safer strategy, postponing action until after the theft happens. As a London Drugs employee said, “We call our loss prevention team, and they will monitor the situation.”
