Students have been hit with an unexpected change at St. George’s Senior School. The administration recently announced that laptops may no longer be used during lunch in the Learning Commons. This decision will force many students to crowd together in T204 — the only authorized laptop space during lunch.
Administration wants to encourage students to keep the library as a laptop-free zone where they can relax and read books, complete crosswords, and study offline. To mitigate the crowding, teachers have opened classrooms around T204, such as T214 and T206, as quiet areas for individual laptop study.

However, moving the laptops out of the main area has come with some confusion. With laptop use in the library shut down, more students are heading to the T204 area to try to get their work done.
“The situation is difficult,” said Daniel Wong (’28). “Everyone is scrambling to find anywhere outside of T204 to use their laptop. People are even dropping into club meetings just to get on their screens, which completely ruins the focus for students trying to participate.”
Despite growing student frustration, school administration maintains that the restructuring will ultimately benefit the student body. “This means we have different places for different activities, so everyone will have somewhere to go,” explained Ms. Phoebe Darwin, Vice-Principal of Student Life.
For many students who used the library’s focused environment to complete research and online assignments during lunch, this move may feel like a setback.
