From Downtown: Side-line Report on the Battle of Harker Hall 2017

There are many rivalries in this world. Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, Marvel and DC, Naruto and Sasuke, and Mayweather and Mcgregor. However, on Wednesday, December 6th, 2017, all rivalries took a backseat to that between the house parents and students of Harker Hall in their 8th annual Battle of Harker Hall basketball game. Last year, the students won for the first time in 5 years (Click here to read an article about this). This year, the students tried to start a win streak. The game started at 7 pm as the boarders and guest from the school entered the Junior School gym.

After introductions by Mr. Figueroa, the two teams took the court in preparations for the big game. The game started with the house parents taking a quick lead with Mr. Costello’s first points of the game. Though the house parents had the lead, the students kept the game close. Despite the students’ best efforts, the house parents still held their lead at the end of the first half.

In the second half, the students tried to mount a comeback, even taking the lead at one point. Their comebacks were highlighted by 3 pointers by Andrew Qian (11) and Darren Sun (12). However, the house parents ended up being too much. They countered with shots by Mr. Chamberlain, Mr. Proznick and Mr. Costello. The students tried to mount one last comeback but in the end, the students lost by a score of 46-41.

While the teachers were happy about the victory, many of the student players were disappointed in the loss. For some students, especially the Grade 12 students, this would their last opportunity to play in the Battle of Harker Hall.  However, some students are already looking forward to next year.

Some students have already started practicing in order to make next year’s team. “I’m going to try-out and make the team next year!” says current Grade 11 Joshua Wong. Regardless of results, one thing is for sure: this Battle of Harker Hall has continued the rivalry between house parents and students for many years to come.
