Junior Rugby Sevens

Eyes on the prize

Two weeks ago with the grade 9’s in the midst of their regular season the coaching staff entered them into a one day ISA Rugby Sevens tournament. Competing against 4 other schools, the St. George’s boys had a reputation to uphold.

Facing adversity in their first match against Collingwood school but narrowly escaped with a 12-10 win with a last second try from captain Thomas Kirkwood (grade 9).The team would continue on their winning ways with convincing wins over St. Michaels’ University School (SMUS) and school rivals Shawinigan Lake School. As the day wound down there was only one team left to face. Brentwood. Win and Saints would finish as champions or lose and take a disappointing second place. Led out by captain of this match Ethan Jaques (grade 9) Saints would take it to their Vancouver Island opponents, winning by a huge 35 points. When speaking with head coach Mr. Dwight Hillis and asked about the teams performance he spoke proudly adding “ the boys came out today and put in the work for each other. We didn’t have a lot of time playing together practice this style of game. In the end we played as one and supported each other and that is the only thing I can ask as a coach”.

Overall the team was proud of how they played. They walked off the field heads held high as they received their ISA rugby title. Hopefully this translates to the 15’s match as they play SMUS Thursday October 29th.
