VANCOUVER- The annual Independent Schools Association, or “ISA”, soccer tournament has always been seen as a great benchmark in which teams like the St. George’s Saints measure themselves up to the other private schools in British Columbia. This year, the ISA tournament was hosted at Shawinigan Lake School in Victoria, from September 21st to the 22nd.

The Saints played their first game against Brentwood College in which they tied 2-2, with goals from Christopher Milani and Marc Levin, the score would later comeback to haunt them. After tying against Brentwood College, they moved onto play Stratford Hall where they finally showed what they were made of, as the Saints won 6-0. But due to how the bracket was set up the Saints would have to proceed to a shootout against Brentwood to determine who would be placed in a higher bracket.

The Saints fell short with only 2 goals scored out of a possible 5, from Theo Sauder and Rahim Shivji, while Brentwood College scored 4 out of 5. “It’s a tough way to lose. However we were tied in point and a shootout was the only way it could all be resolved, and now we know what needs to be improved upon, ” said Calen Falconer-Bayard, the starting center midfielder for the Saints.

After the shootout the Saints were determined to pick themselves up, and they did not disappoint. The Saints bested Collingwood School by 3-0,while Brentwood played St. Michael’s University beating them by 2-1.

The Saints finished the tournament by placing 5th, with a record of 3 wins and 1 tie. On the other hand, Brentwood College would clinch 4th with a final record of 1 win and 1 tie as well as 2 losses.

It seems that the Saints were out of luck this time, but as they look forward to the CAIS tournament that takes place mid-October in St. Catharines, Ontario. There, they can truly measure themselves up to Canada’s best soccer squads!
