A new iPhone? Nope. Two new iPhones!

The two newest additions to the iPhone family, the 5S and 5C, will be available on September 20th.
The two newest additions to the iPhone family, the 5S and 5C, will be available on September 20th.

For once in the iPhone’s six year history, Apple has made an exception to its customary “one model at a time”. The two new models are the 5S and the 5C, one being cheaper, as well as more affordable, while the other aims to be “the gold standard of smartphones”. Contrasting what the company has done in the previous years, Apple’s latest iPhones will come in a diversity of colours. Both are released on September 20th, and they will be available in the U.S., Australia, China, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Singapore, and the UK. The world anxiously waits as the 5C and 5S prepares to launch.

Apple’s cutting-edge iPhone models were unveiled during an event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. These two new additions to the iPhone family arrive at a time when rival cell phone companies, such as Samsung, are challenging Apple’s sterling position in the smartphone market. Gartner Inc., a research firm, estimates that Apple holds 14.4% share of the world’s smartphone market. Placing as No. 2 behind Samsung’s 31.7%. With their new 5C, a more affordable phone, Apple hopes to increase their share on the market.

The lower costing iPhone 5C will be available in five colours. This fun and colourful iPhone comes in green, blue, yellow, pink, and white. The 5C has a 4-inch screen and is powered by Apple’s A6 chip. Camera features include an 8 megapixel camera, live photo filters, and rear cover that lights up. The phone is expected to help Apple boost their sales in China, where the majority of the population desires cheaper prices. Quite a clever marketing scheme from Apple.

The second model, the 5S, is “the most forward-looking phone we have ever created,” claimed Phil Schiller, Senior Vice-President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple. The luxurious 5S will come in 3 colours, silver, gold, and “space” grey. The phone will also run the newest chip, the A7, which is up to twice as fast as the A6. In addition to the colour and the chip, features on the 5S have received some major upgrades as well. The phone includes the new iSight, Touch ID, and a fingerprint reader. These new features will no doubt increase the iPhones’ accessibility.

Over and above the new iPhones’ release, Apple’s new operating system, iOS 7, will be available for free download on September 18. The new system works on any model later and including iPhone 4 and iPad 2. With the release of iOS7, iPhone 5C, and iPhone 5S, Apple aims to be the most popular mobile operating system in the world.
