The St. George’s Swim Team won their fifteenth consecutive Boys’ Banner at the ISA swim championships on Thursday, October 15th. Hosted at the Watermania Recreation Center in Richmond, the team also finished 2nd in the overall category (combined boys and girls). A total of 61 swimmers competed in both the “B” (school-only) and “Open” (club) categories in the 50s of each stroke, the 100 freestyle, 100 individual medley, and relays.
Some of the highlights of the day included Nathan Lee (‘28)’s new school and meet record in the 50 metre butterfly, Matthew Cao (‘28)’s new school and meet record in the 100 metre individual medley, Will Xu (‘31)’s new junior meet record in the 200 metre individual medley, and meet records in the mixed and boys’ 4×50 metre medley relays (Preston She (‘27), Joshua Ong (‘27), Tyler Clogg (‘28), Matthew Cao).
This reporter got a chance to interview one of these standout athletes, Tyler Clogg, after their record-breaking swim. “It feels great! Relays are ultimately just four men stepping up, putting your best foot forward, and hoping for the best result,” he said. “Hard work pays off.”
Spirits were indeed quite high on the pool deck today, as each school ecstatically cheered on their competing swimmers. “This is my third year and I think this is the best team energy I’ve seen,” said assistant coach and trainer Parsa Moradi. “I see a lot of team cheering and support, which is great.”
The job’s not finished. In three weeks’ time, the school swim team will come back to Watermania to compete in BCSS Zones, the qualifying competition for school provincials. Stay tuned for further coverage!
