Varsity Tennis – Strong Start In Opener

On Monday April 3rd, the Senior Varsity Tennis team opened their season against local rivals, Vancouver College (VC). The match was after school at 3:45pm at the St. George’s courts.

This year, the team consisted of a good mix of grade 11s and 12s: Ty Mya (10), Neo Huang (11), Joshua Pollock (11), Andrew Huang (11), Eric Cheng (12), Didier Traile (12), Edward Yu (12), and co-captains Brandon Leung (12), Max Gupta (12), Andrew Day (12), and Gerry Macken as the head coach.

Coming into the match, Saints knew it was going to be tough as VC was one of the top ranked teams. As expected all the matches were close and fast paced. Saints did extremely well, winning 4 out of their 6 matches, while Crofton went 3-2, resulting in a 7-4 victory for Saints and Crofton. For Saints, Brandon Leung and Paul Bao won doubles, Andrew Huang and Ty Mya won doubles, Edward Yu won mixed doubles, and Josh Pollock won singles.

Building off a strong season last year, where they won ISA’s and made the BC provincials, the team looks to continue this momentum next week in a matchup against Notre Dame. Then on April 25th, they will compete in the annual ISA tournament in Burnaby, where they will look to win for the 6th consecutive season.

Starting the season on a high, co-captain Brandon Leung and 5 year vet on the Varsity team had this to say on his hopes for the rest of the season: “Our boys weren’t surprised to face such stiff opposition in the form of VC, but we demonstrated perseverance and discipline to pull out the overall win. We, however, know that ISAs are coming soon so we’re going to be right back at the practice courts to bring home another ISA title for Saints. In my final year on the team, I hope I can contribute to a successful season and end my Saints career on a positive”.
