The weekend of September 15th marked the start of the St. George’s 2nd Varsity soccer team season as the boys participated in the annual ISA tournament held on Vancouver Island. This tournament marked the first time the team played together, as the final team was decided just a day before the team travelled to the island. The team comprises of many new faces this year, as there are just a few returning seniors.

The team kicked off the tournament with three games on Friday. The first game was against host team SMUS, and in the end, the team came out with a win due to some fortunate bounces during the game, as Mulgrave had an own goal. In the second game, the team lost focus at the end of the game and gave up 3 consecutive goals in a 3-2 loss.

The last two games of the tournament both proved to be losses. Aberdeen Hall and St. John’s were a little faster, and fluent with their game compared to the St. George’s team. Even though the team finished with a disappointing 1-3 record, coach Mr. Ouwerkerk was happy with the team’s effort as it was the first time all the players played collectively as a group.

“Obviously, the result from the games weren’t exactly satisfying, but the group started to bond very well and this tournament will be seen as a building block moving forward”. – Sasha Twardoski
