Ski And Snowboard Provincials 2015

The skiers and snowboarders pose for a picture before the long bus ride to Revelstoke.

After the Saints Ski Team’s big win at the Provincial Championships in Revelstoke, BC, all the returning athletes had a story to tell. Many spoke of the astounding achievements on the mountain, such as Griffin Smith’s 2nd overall placing in both the Giant Slalom (GS) and Skier Cross.

However, the story that caught our attention the most was a tale of teamwork, friendship, and comradery. The Creed was lucky to obtain an exclusive interview with the 3rd and 4th fastest GS skiers in the school, Blair Ference and Ben Kirsh, to tell us of this heart-warming act of kindness. On the evening before the final, most important day of racing at Revelstoke, all the team members were full of nerves and excitement. As Grade 11 skier Ben Kirsh said of his first day on the mountain, “The snow was similar (to Whistler), but the whole mountain was groomed and faster”. At the end of the evening, as everyone went to rest up for an important day ahead, Grade 9 skier, and 2nd fastest in the school, Matthew Ng, went down to the ski storage room to help out his friends. He grabbed the ski and snowboard waxing gear, and proceeded to wax all of his teammates skis and boards. According to Ben Kirsh, Matt spent “a good two hours” helping out his teammates. The whole team was surely bursting with appreciation for their teammate.

Matthew’s waxing definitely helped out the team, as many of the team members were able to repeat their high scores from the GS the day before. Below are the top scores for the school on both days. Special thanks to Mr. Wohlgemuth for being a fantastic coach and mentor for the victorious team.
