Saints Win First Ross Cup In 10 Years

The Ross Cup is a Secondary School ice hockey tournament hosted annually by Brentwood College School. This years tournaments were held on Thursday February 27th for the juniors and from Friday February 28th to March 1st for the seniors. For this years Ross Cup, St. George’s was able to enter all three of their hockey teams in the tournament and was fortunate to have two teams winning in their respective divisions.

The U-15 team was in the junior tournament and had a successful day playing four round robin games and only losing once. The U-15’s long day ended with a comeback 2-1 victory against Shawnigan Lake School in the final to win the junior tournament.

The Varsity and Junior Varsity teams played in the senior tournament the next day. The junior varsity team opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Brentwood College School which was directly followed by the varsity team winning against Cowichan Secondary School. The two teams then selected players to represent them at the skill competition. Blake Hayward, Elie Dumaresq, and Liam Ross were selected to represent the Varsity team while Ryan Watt, Jamie Ambrose, Ben Poisson, Devon Mussio, and Connor Chiu represented the junior varsity team. The day continued with the Junior Varsity team dropping games to Kitsilano and Shawnigan Lake and the Varsity team beating Brentwood and tying Kitsilano who they would play in the semi-final the next day.

The final day of Ross Cup started bright and early with Cowichan and Shawnigan Lake playing in the first semi-final game where Shawnigan Lake was victorious and advanced to the final. The varsity team and Kitsilano Secondary played in the second semi-final game and the Saints would come back from being down 2-0 to win 3-2 and meet Shawnigan Lake in the final. The Saints sailed comfortably through the final beating Shawnigan 7-2 to win the 2014 Ross Cup.
