The St. George’s junior varsity hockey team is comprised of 20 grade 9 and 10 students. After having two wins to start their season, the team was eager to keep their streak going as they played two games in two days. On Thursday January 16th the Saints faced-off against Prince of Wales and played against Brentwood College school on Friday.

On Thursday January 16th out at U.B.C, the jv team played in their first of two games against Prince of Wales. The Saints came out slow in the first two periods and found themselves down 3-0 at the break. At around 9:30 in the first period P.W got the puck from the corner and were able to find an open player for a tap in goal. Later in the frame, P.W capitalized on a breakaway that was caused by a turnover at the Saints’ blue line. The Saints than found themselves in penalty trouble and P.W pounced on their opportunities, scoring another tap in goal on the power play. Saints’ goalie Liam Ross (10) was solid between the pipes keeping the Saints in the game despite facing many shots.  P.W was able to capitalize on the Saint’s mistakes and were always to find an open man around their net. The Saints came out strong in the third period and scored right out of the gate with Johnny Newell (9) scoring yet another tap in goal. The game was close all the way to the end, but P.W scored two more goals to make the final score 5-1 for P.W.

On Friday, January 17th the Saints headed back to U.B.C and were determined to have a better performance than they did the previous day as they were prepared to battle against Brentwood College School. The Saints dominated the game with their first goal coming again from Johnny Newell (9) on a backdoor play that was set up by Ryan Watt (9) ten minutes into the game. Minutes later, Kaiz Bhatia (10) scored on a one-timer set up by Nolan Lee (9). On the same shift Ryan Watt (9) scored off of Nolan Lee’s (9) rebound to take a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission. In the second and third periods the saints added 4 more goals from Devon Mussio (9), Will Andrews (9), Jamie Ambrose (9), and Kaiz Bhatia(10) picking up his second goal of the game. Goalie Connor Chiu (10) played very well in net and the game finished with the Saints winning 7-0.

The boys were all smiles on the bus ride back to school knowing that they all performed their best. Head coach James Wyatt was very happy with how his team improved over the two days and had this to say: “The boys played very well this afternoon (against Brentwood) and they started improving on our set offensive and defensive plays as the game went on.”
