This Day in History, January 15th
On January 15th, 2001, a free wiki, Wikipedia, went online.
The website was established by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, the latter created the name for the online reference website; the prefix “wiki” came from the Hawaiian word for “quick” and “pedia” derived from “encyclopedia.”
The website would go on and eventually surpass the Chinese encyclopedia, the “Yongle Encyclopedia” penned in the Ming Dynasty, to become the world’s biggest reference source.
The service is operating in a way that every internet user can edit any pages and titles. This concept constantly brings up the concern regarding accuracy and impartialness.
