On December 3rd 1979, Ruhollah Khomeini became the first Supreme Leader of Iran. Khomeini influenced the 1979 Revolution that overthrew the Mohammad Reza Pahlavi regime by his writing and activities against the Shah, the former ruler. He became the Supreme Leader after Iran was proclaimed a Islamic theoretic republic. His position was one of great influence, serving as the ultimate interpreter of the Islamic law–the Shari’a. He affirmed the clerical influence and control in the state government and installed the new constitution after popular referendum.

 

Khomeini was named the Man of the Year in 1979 by Time Magazine because of his great sphere of influence.
