Bears for Kids—Teddy Bear Toss a Major Success

November 26th—hundreds of people from the St. George’s community gathered at Father Bauer Arena in UBC to watch the Saints U15 Prep hockey team take on the North Shore Warriors in the annual Teddy Bear Toss game. The point of the event was to collect bears and raise money for the school’s Hamper Drive. Every spectator was to bring a teddy bear to the game and throw it onto the ice as soon as St. George’s scored their first goal.

Luckily, they didn’t have to wait very long. Jacob Schwartz 27’ scored just 50 seconds into the game. Bears rained onto the ice, and the next ten minutes were spent picking up hundreds of stuffed animals. The game resumed, and from there, it was a throttling. Saints added seven more goals over the following two periods but unfortunately lost the shutout late in the third. The game ended 8-1 in favour of St. George’s with over 350 bears and $2500 in donations collected for the Hamper Drive.

Hopefully, next year is even better!
