Senior Tennis Team Aces To Victory
On April 26th, the Senior Tennis team competed in the Independent School Association (ISA) annual tennis tournament. The tournament was held in Burnaby and consisted of 8 teams from the Lower Mainland. The team consisted of: Brandon Leung(11), Max Gupta(11), Andrew Day(11), Didier Traile(11), Paul Bao(11), Blair Wilson(12), Ben Kirsh(12), James O’Brien(12), and Gerry Macken as the head coach.
The tournament was a huge success with Saints coming in 1st place. The whole team went undefeated expect for a very close loss in the doubles match. Other than that close game, almost all the matches were won by convincing scores of 6-0 and 6-1. The doubles team of Max Gupta and Andrew Day (also known as Kyrgios and Kokinakkis) were unstoppable at the ISA’s, winning every set. Brandon Leung who is a 4th year senior player had this to say about his experience: “ISA’s was a good win for us. It was an excellent opportunity to improve and develop our game. But we still need to work hard as provincials is coming soon. The entire tennis team is motivated to bring back another provincial title to St. George’s.” This year’s title contributed to the total of over 15 that the team has won in previous years.
Although this was the team’s first tournament of the season, they have had a very successful season. The team has gone undefeated in every match this season against teams such as; Brentwood and West Point Gray Academy. The team is practicing twice a week to get ready for the upcoming provincials where they look to bring another Provincial Banner to Saints. Max Gupta who has been on the team for 4 years said this about the tournament: “This year’s ISA’s served as a good indicator of how the team is faring early in the year and helped to give us a much needed confidence boost leading into provincials”.
