BC Hoops Recap, Grade 9 & 10
On February 27- March 1 the 2016 Telus Junior Boys Provincial Championships and were held at the Langley Events Centre. Following that, on March 3-5 the 2016 Grade 9 Provincial Championships took place. Both Saints teams qualified and made a good run in each of their provincials.
The Junior Varsity team was the 12 seed out of 32 teams entering the championships. They breezed by their first opponent, #21 Sir Winston Churchill. In their second game they were facing #5 Pitt Meadows Secondary School in the sweet 16. They got the upset win and punched their tickets to the elite eight. Their opponents were #4 Brentwood College. Unfortunately Brentwood was a little too much to handle. The boys were knocked out. Brentwood went on to win the title. The Junior boys finished strong as they placed themselves 6th best in the province. Chris Douglas (10) was named a second team all star.
The Grade 9 boys were coming into the provincials undefeated and with the #1 seed. They won their first two games easily and cruised their way into the semi-finals. In the semi-finals they met Burnaby South. It was a nail-biting game and the Saints lost in heart-breaking fashion. They missed a free throw which would have sent the game into overtime. The boys showed true character as they came back the next day and defeated Charles Tupper Secondary School. They claimed third in the province.
These are great results for the St. George’s basketball program and the school is sure excited to see what these boys can do next year when they lace up for the Junior and Senior Varsity squads next November.
