On Monday February 1st, the St. Georges varsity basketball team played their last home game of the season. It was a big game as their opponents, Walnut Grove Gators, are currently ranked 3rd in the province. This also meant it was senior night for grade 12 players Wesley Graham, Will Sauder, Jewan Hong and Tyler Jue’s as their final game on the Dragon’s court.

The Saints lost the game 89-95 in a hard fought battle. The Saints team started off the game playing very well as they lead by 10 at one point in the first quarter. By the end of the second quarter, the Gators proved why they are ranked 3rd in the province storming back to tie the game going into the half. In the 3rd quarter, the Gators pushed the lead out and it was too little too late for the Saints squad to comeback.

Although this was the last home game for the team, there is still plenty of basketball to be played. Kicking off with game 2 of the Saints/VC series at Vancouver College on February 9th.  Star guard Jon Mikhilin (11) will make his return from injury. The following week is the beginning of the Lower Mainland Basketball playoffs. If all goes well, the Saints will be off to the provincial championships at the Langley Events Centre, March 9th to March 12th.

Tyler Jue (12), said this after the game, “It has been an honour to be apart of the St. George’s basketball program. It’s sad we couldn’t get the win on senior night but everybody played well and left it all out on the floor. We’ll be looking to bigger and better things for the future.”
