Saints Sprint Their Way to the Podium
On April 11 2015, select athletes from the St. George’s Track & Field Team competed in The Province Harry Jerome Gran Forza V at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Schools from all around B.C. sent teams of 4 or 5 to compete for the title of Gran Forza V champion and the grand prize of $1,500. The meet comprised of four individual events and one team event: shot put, standing long jump, 50m, 800m and a 4×200 relay. At the end of all events, the three teams with the most combined team points (based on international scoring charts) in each division were awarded medals and bursary money for their respective schools.
Saints sent two teams consisting of athletes from Grade 9-12 to compete in the Senior Boys division. The teams were as follows:
A Team: Kennedy Chow (Grade 12) – 50m, Colin Mitchell (Grade 12) – 800m, Chris Bonner (Grade 11) – Shot Put, Kenneth Ng (Grade 11) – Standing Long Jump
B Team: Quinn Litherland (Grade 10) – 50m, Roberto Pelayo-Mazzone (Grade 10) – 800m, Arthur Leung (Grade 9) – Shot Put, Edison Tse (Grade 11) – Standing Long Jump
Overall, Saints had an excellent showing, with every single athlete in a St. George’s singlet doing the best he could and representing the school well. Outstanding results included Quinn Litherland’s 4th place finish in the 50m, Roberto Pelayo-Mazzone’s 4th place finish in the 800m, Chris Bonner’s 4th place finish in Shot Put and Kenneth Ng’s 1st place finish in the Standing Long Jump. The A Team also had a superb performance in the 4×200 relay, finishing 4th and only losing to 3rd by twenty milliseconds. In the end, the B Team and A Team finished 3rd and 4th respectively for overall points out of 13 teams: an excellent result for both teams and a great start to the season.
