All Smiles as 1st XI Cruise to 5-0 win
Soccer season has hit the St. George’s Senior School and with the first match finished the 1st XI soccer team has high hopes for the season.
With the team’s first match on Wednesday, September 16th against WPGA (West Point Grey Academy) there was a nervous anticipation surrounding the team. Although no players wanted to admit this, it was not hard to see that there was uneasiness about the team during warm-up. Having just completed tryouts the day prior and most of the players still learning names it was hard to predict how the match would turn out. As Jamie Catliff (Grade 11) stated “ We were nervous coming in. I believe in this team however and I think we will do just fine.
The game started in a fury with both teams pushing for the opening goal. It was not long after kick-off when striker Sean Letvinchuk (Grade 11) put in the opening goal. From there Saints would cruise with a goal from Tyler Gilman (Grade 10) and a pair from Jamie Catliff (Grade 11) heading into the half with a promising 4-0 lead.
Captain Brandon Axford (Grade 12) had a strong match, anchoring the St. George’s defense and playing a key role keeping WPGA off the scoreboard for the entirety of the match. In the midfield Ricky Lawrence and Michael Jung (Both Grade 12) had strong showings in their season debuts. The striker combination of Sean Letvinchuk and Jamie Catliff proved to be a good decision by head coach Steffen Tweedle as they combined for three goals and five assists.
Overall the season looks promising for the 1st XI this year. With ISA’s coming up this weekend it will be a true test of chemistry, teamwork and brotherhood.
