When Donald Trump first declared that he would run for president, his odds of winning were less than two percent. He was never known for his engagement in politics, but rather he was the face of a cooperation that consisted of beautiful highrises and luxurious hotels across the world. In general, many deeply questioned Trump’s actual intent of becoming the 45th president of the United States. Until now. In astonishing fashion, Trump was elected president on the evening of November 8th, 2016, over democratic rival Hillary Clinton. Alongside Vice President Mike Pence, the republican nominee Trump gained 279 electoral votes, over the 228 electoral votes that Hillary Clinton won. As expected, Trump dominated the states in the east, and Clinton swept the west. However, Trump’s stunning victories of the major states of Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania played a large role in Trump’s overall win, as Trump edged out Clinton in Florida and Pennsylvania by a slim margin of less than two percent. Not only did Trump win presidency, but the republican party swept the “White House”, as the rep both The House and The Senate by majority.

One of the more interesting parts that came from the results were the voting percentages of different ethnic and gender groups. Before the election date, Trump was widely criticized for his “locker room talk” of women. However, many women did not seem to care about his sexist and discriminatory remarks, as 53 percent of white women voted for Trump, over Clinton. However, non-caucasian women voted in extreme favour of Hillary Clinton, the candidate the chased the opportunity of becoming the first female president of the United States. An overwhelming 94 percent of black women voted for Hillary Clinton, as well as 68 percent of Latino women were in favour of Clinton.

The major question coming into the election wasn’t the matter of who was the better candidate, but rather who would do the least amount of damage in the white house. Many people voted for one candidate, in hopes that the other would not gain presidency. The country was opposed of which downsides of each candidate were potentially more worse; Clinton used a private email server which consisted of over 33,000 emails, yet Trump is often depicted as one who objectifies women, and simply a maniac. The decision truly came down to who was “the lesser of two evils”. One individual claimed how Clinton “simply can’t tell the truth” and another was not too fond of “Trump’s language and behaviour”. Trump does have his fair share of supporters, as a woman named Laurie Jones claimed that she [does] believe [Trump] does like women. He cares for his daughters and wife and female employees. He does respect women.”

Perhaps the most interesting yet hidden element of this entire election is that Trump is arguably a democrat at heart. In 2004, Trump stated that he “probably [identifies] more as a Democrat.” Trump stated that “It just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans.” Moreover, The United States has “had some pretty bad disaster[s] under the Republicans.” In fact, Trump has always possessed high praise for Hillary Clinton. When asked about how Hillary would do in regards to foreign deals he claimed that “Hillary would do a good job” because “Hillary’s always surrounded herself with very good people.” Trump never really liked how Bush handled things in the White house, and has criticized the work of many other republicans.

There is no doubt that Trump is currently one of the most controversial figures across the U.S. and the globe. He has gone from a successful and powerful businessman whose personal net worth is valued at over four billion dollars, to a man who will dictate the crucial decisions when it comes to wars, national defence, and the economic crisis.
